Shaping Level Sets with Submodular Functions

چکیده
We consider a class of sparsity-inducing regularization terms based on submodular functions. While previous work has focused on non-decreasing functions, we explore symmetric submodular functions and their Lovász extensions. We show that the Lovász extension may be seen as the convex envelope of a function that depends on level sets (i.e., the set of indices whose corresponding components of the underlying predictor are greater than a given constant): this leads to a class of convex structured regularization terms that impose prior knowledge on the level sets, and not only on the supports of the underlying predictors. We provide a unified set of optimization algorithms, such as proximal operators, and theoretical guarantees (allowed level sets and recovery conditions). By selecting specific submodular functions, we give a new interpretation to known norms, such as the total variation; we also define new norms, in particular ones that are based on order statistics with application to clustering and outlier detection, and on noisy cuts in graphs with application to change point detection in the presence of outliers.

Some Results about the Contractions and the Pendant Pairs of a Submodular System
Submodularity is an important property of set functions with deep theoretical results and various applications. Submodular systems appear in many applicable area, for example machine learning, economics, computer vision, social science, game theory and combinatorial optimization. Nowadays submodular functions optimization has been attracted by many researchers. Pendant pairs of a symmetric...
متن کاملSubmodular meets Structured: Finding Diverse Subsets in Exponentially-Large Structured Item Sets
To cope with the high level of ambiguity faced in domains such as Computer Vision or Natural Language processing, robust prediction methods often search for a diverse set of high-quality candidate solutions or proposals. In structured prediction problems, this becomes a daunting task, as the solution space (image labelings, sentence parses, etc.) is exponentially large. We study greedy algorith...
متن کاملMaximizing Bisubmodular and k-Submodular Functions
Submodular functions play a key role in combinatorial optimization and in the study of valued constraint satisfaction problems. Recently, there has been interest in the class of bisubmodular functions, which assign values to disjoint pairs of sets. Like submodular functions, bisubmodular functions can be minimized exactly in polynomial time and exhibit the property of diminishing returns common...

Recent developments in the use of greedy algorithms in linear programming are reviewed and extended. We find a common generalization of some theorems of Queyranne–Spieksma– Tardella, Faigle–Kern, and Fujishige about greedy algorithms for linear programs in diverse contexts. Additionally, we extend a well-known theorem of Topkis about submodular functions on the product of chains to submodular f...
متن کاملEfficient Determination of Gibbs Estimators with Submodular Energy Functions
Now the Gibbs estimators are used to solve many problems in computer vision, optimal control, Bayesian statistics etc. Their determination is equivalent to minimization of corresponding energy functions. Therefore, the real use of the estimators is restricted by opportunity to compute or evaluate satisfactory values of the energy functions. New combinatorial techniques that have been developed ...
